Professional Overview
A lifelong resident of Alabama, Steven graduated from the University of Alabama with a Bachelor’s degree in History in 1986. He then attended the University of Alabama School of Law where he met his wife, Crystal Hartley. Steven graduated from the University of Alabama School of Law in 1990 and began private practice with the firm of Starnes & Atchison in Birmingham. While there, Steven’s practice was limited to the defense of civil litigation, and he handled cases ranging from wrongful death, workers’ compensation, and personal injury to bad faith, fraud, and employment issues. Steven tried both jury and non-jury cases in State and Federal Court, and was made partner in December 1996.
In March 1999, Steven joined longtime friends Lonnie Wainwright and Linda Pope to focus his practice primarily on the defense of workers’ compensation cases. Since that time Steven has handled cases throughout the State of Alabama, representing both large corporations and small Alabama companies.

Representative Experience
- A regular speaker on workers’ compensation topics, Steven has previously served as the chairperson for the Alabama State Bar Workers’ Compensation Section, as well as the Birmingham Bar Association Workers’ Compensation Section.
